HISTORY IN THE MAKING: THE “CORRIEDALE” EXPL0SION SHATTERS RECORDS

Coronation Street and Emmerdale have achieved a huge streaming record in the wake of the recent Corriedale crossover. The scenes last month saw the two ITV soaps join forces for a special episode centred around a multi-vehicle pile-up.

After breaking an initial one-year record with the crossover, the broadcaster has shared more figures for January, confirming that Corriedale was the biggest programme of the month with a 5.9 million audience across consolidated TV and streaming.

Even more impressively, both soaps achieved their highest monthly streaming numbers ever in the wake of the ep, up 48% year on year. This totalled 65 million streams combined, which ITV said is 10 million more than the next monthly total.

The network also revealed that January was the biggest month for streaming in ITV’s history, with its 383 million beating the previous high of June 2024 amid the Men’s Euros, with soaps, reality TV and drama largely driving the increase.

“The combination of a brilliant drama offering, two of our biggest brands – Coronation Street and Emmerdale, alongside our most popular show for 16-34s, Love Island, have come together to deliver ITVX its biggest ever month,” said ITV’s Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Kevin Lygo.

“2026 is packed full of exciting new content and it’s fantastic to kick start the year with this milestone,” he added.

The repercussions of the Corriedale crossover’s events are still rippling through, with Corrie’s Debbie Webster actor Sue Devaney recently revealing that her character wanted to tell Carl the truth that she is his mother at the start of the special.

“I think she’s always been waiting for the right moment,” she said. “Because she’s been diagnosed with dementia, she wants to tell the truth before she forgets it. At that moment, when she was in the car, there was a feeling that she was about to tell him something.

“[It was] almost to try and stop him doing what he was doing. I think she’s been wanting to tell him a few times, and she just doesn’t find the right time.”
