FAREWELL TO A LEGEND: Home and Away Star Dies After Cancer Battle – Was Alf Stewart’s Praise Her Final Goodbye?
The world of Australian television lost one of its most iconic voices on May 29, 2018, as Cornelia Frances, best known for portraying the formidable Morag Bellingham on Home and Away, passed away at the age of 77. Her final days were spent in Sydney, surrounded by the people who meant the most to her — family, friends, and those whose lives she had touched both on screen and off.
The Woman Behind Morag: Fierce, Witty, and Unforgettable
For years, Morag Bellingham walked the beaches and courtrooms of Summer Bay with cutting precision and unshakable pride. She was the sister of Alf Stewart, the foil to many, and the quiet protector of justice when the world refused to listen. Behind that steely exterior was Cornelia Frances, a woman of wit, dignity, and dramatic fire.

To her colleagues, she was more than a performer. Ray Meagher, who played Alf Stewart — Morag’s on-screen brother — paid tribute to his longtime friend and scene partner:
“Cornie was an incredibly loved and valued member of our cast over many, many years. We had a moment of silence for her on set this morning, and she’ll be sadly missed by both cast and crew.”
Her presence wasn’t just confined to Home and Away. Cornelia left her mark across Australian screens with a commanding résumé: Sons and Daughters, Young Doctors, Prisoner, Kingswood Country, and, of course, the icy brilliance she brought to the game show The Weakest Link.
A Battle with Grace — and Grit
Frances was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2017, and the illness quickly spread to her hip. In January 2018, from her hospital bed, she gave a powerful and candid interview to The Sunday Telegraph, sharing the series of misfortunes that marked her final year.
“I swear I have had a hex placed on me for the past 12 months,” she said. “I discovered I had bladder cancer. This then spread to my hip bone which fractured, and then I almost died from loss of blood due to an ulcer in my throat. Despite all this, I am still here, as the old song goes.”
Her fighting spirit never wavered. Even as her health declined, she expressed hope of returning to the screen as Morag, never fully saying goodbye to the Bay that defined her legacy.
“I would dearly love to go back to Summer Bay but haven’t heard anything as yet,” she said.
Tragically, the return never came.

A Legacy Written in Sharp Lines and Silent Strength
In the words of a Channel Seven spokesperson:
“Cornelia Frances was a unique person. Her on-screen presence inspired a generation of actors. This gift was coupled with an ability to bring a sense of dignity and presence into each room she entered. Her energy and character will be missed.”
She is survived by her son, Lawrence.
Cornelia Frances brought power, mystery, and gravitas to every scene she graced. Summer Bay will feel emptier without her, but her legacy continues in every rerun, every dramatic twist, and every young actor trying to channel even a fraction of the fire she brought to screen.
How will Home and Away ever fill the space Morag left behind?
